- World’s Largest Poker Site
- Highly recommended
- Huge Record Breaking Promotions
- Trusted brand
From the moment you download Pokerstars you know you’re playing at the largest poker site in the world. The huge player base is astounding with over 220,000 players often online at peak times. The game choice is huge with plenty to offer everyone at all stake levels, you’d be hard pressed to not find a game at PokerStars, whichever variation of the game you play. It’s the only site with a good choice of games in poker variations other than Texas Holdem, if you ever fancy a game of Omaha, Draw, Stud, Courchevel, Irish or even HORSE then you need to check out what you’ve been missing.
Established in 2000, the Pokerstars brand has become synonymous with trust – when the events of Black Friday meant the leading sites had to exit the USA market overnight, the only players to be paid promptly were those who held their bankroll at Stars. This and their recent ‘bailout’ of Full Tilt Poker has strengthened their position in the global market and now they are an unstoppable force dominating the poker world.
As you would expect at such a large poker room there are players at Pokerstars at every level, all the way from the complete beginner to the hardened professional. You are just as likely to find yourself sitting next to the guy next door as one of the poker elite like Liv Boeree, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier or Daniel Negreanu.
The weekly $1 million tournament attracts all of the big names and although it has a life changing first prize of $200k+, it perhaps represents the one problem with Pokerstars, it is sometimes just too big for tournament players. Rarely will you find an overlay, every tournament is fully subscribed and there are no easy rides. The prizes are good for the outlay but you are up against so many other players, it feels like the element of skill is diminished in comparison to smaller sites and you are unlikely to win any tournament without a good share of luck. Some bigger tourneys feel more like a lottery – I may complain but it still doesn’t stop me and I regularly compete in smaller satellites (from just 11c) to get the chance to ‘try my luck’ in the $200 entry Sunday Million. Nothing beats the thrill of competing for such high reward from so little money.
There’s so much I could write about what is going on at Stars every single day but to be truthful I could bore you to death and write 5000 words on it and I still wouldn’t cover the whole story, but suffice to day, Pokerstars is the world leader, they are there for a reason. Try them.
The very first thing you should do when you open Pokerstars for the first time is get to grips with the filter system. Believe me, you will thank me for it later (click the image for an enlarged version).
The software works well on all platforms, whether you want to play on a tablet, PC, Mac or your smartphone (UK only at the moment) the experience is always slick and professional. A lot of thought has gone into the layout of the lobbies and filters. You can queue for a seat or ask the software to find one for you, everything you would expect from a world leader.
Uniquely in the poker world at Stars you can set up your own Poker Club and invite your mates to join in and play the games YOU want to play when YOU want to play them. This revolutionary concept – Homes Games – is available exclusively at PokerStars.
For players, new and old, living in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) who have an iPhone, iPad or Android device there’s a PokerStars Mobile Poker App. Simply download the App from PokerStars direct from your phone after you have set up your account. You can even manage your account anytime, anywhere using your phone once you have downloaded the App with Web Cashier.

Pokerstars is a cash game player’s dream. There are plenty of tables around the clock with action available 24/7 at even the lesser known variants. At low levels it can be quite easy to find some soft games – remember, in general, the higher the player / flop percentage displayed in the cash lobby, the softer the game.
At high stakes the competition can be brutal, but not always, pick your table wisely, invest some time on choosing the right table for you. As the old saying goes ‘if you don’t know who the fish is at the table, then it’s you’, if you’re not comfortable at a table, then leave, with all this choice on offer you can pick and choose your opponents.

Diamond tournies have a buy in of 100 FPPs for a 30 day ticket, Hearts play at buy ins of $0.10 and level Spades at $1.10. Pokerstars was the first online poker site to have a VIP Loyalty Programme to reward their frequent players. Every real money player will earn points (Frequent Player Points – FPPs) as they play which can be exchanged for cash, used to enter online tournaments (including Live Game satellites) or spent in the excellent online shop. VIP Player Points (VPPs) determine your VIP level and are reset every calendar month – each time you earn 1 x VPP you will have earned at least 1 x FPPs, based on your VIP level. The higher your status the better your rewards will be. The moment you start playing at Pokerstars you become a Bronzestar VIP and can join the exclusive freerolls that are played at every VIP level.
Leaderboards & Leagues
The PokerStars Multi-Table Tournament Leaderboard come in three formats – The Weekly Leader Board, the Monthly Leader Board and the Yearly Leader Board. Every time you place in the top 15% you will be awarded Tournament Leader Board Points (TLB points) which count towards the following:
The Weekly Leader Board takes your best 10 results for the week and the player with the highest score gets to play, Heads Up, a Pro member of Team Poker Stars. The only area I feel Stars could improve, I’d love live chat support from within the game, or even from the website. At the moment the only way to contact them is via email and you can expect to wait at least a couple of hours for a response. Not bad in the big scheme of things, but it could be improved.
